About

Charles Hollemeersch — graphics programmer, PhD, co-founder of Graphine, and wet plate photographer.

Charles is a graphics programmer in the computer game industry.

In 2012 Charles received his Ph.D. degree at Ghent University, Belgium. His doctoral research focused on virtual texturing — a technique for rendering surfaces with textures far larger than what fits in GPU memory by streaming only the visible portions on demand.

After finishing his Ph.D., Charles joined Graphine as a co-founder and CTO. Graphine develops the Granite SDK, a commercial virtual texturing middleware solution used in games and real-time applications.

Before that, Charles worked as a graphics programmer at Splash Damage in London, where he contributed to Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Brink.

Besides his computer graphics related work, he is also active in the field of alternative (chemistry-based) photographic processes and techniques — in particular wet plate collodion, an 1850s photographic process that produces one-of-a-kind glass or metal positives using silver nitrate and hand-poured collodion.
