Here is a video of our real-time virtual texturing demo running at 1080p. The demo streams a 32768×16384 pixel island texture on the fly — only the visible, relevant mip levels are resident in GPU memory at any time.
The demo was built to show off the research that would eventually become the Granite SDK. The island scene is a good showcase because it has a large continuous ground plane where texture repetition would be immediately obvious without virtual texturing.
At the time, running a demo of this scale smoothly at 1080p in real-time was a meaningful technical milestone. The system handles feedback, tile decoding, DXT compression, tile upload and page table management entirely on the CPU side, leaving the GPU free for rendering.
